Sam Fitzgerald-Scales
We always try to keep a collection of Sam’s semi-abstract raku ware animal forms in the gallery however, these charming sculptures are becoming very popular as this artist’s work gains recognition and collectors. Raku is inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing, brought to the west by Bernard Leach after he attended a tea ceremony in Tokyo.
Sam is an artist predominantly working in clay with a passion for animals. She studied for 5 years at Medway Art College, Portsmouth Polytechnic and Eastern Illinois University gaining an OND & HND in 3D Design Crafts, a BA (hons) in Fine Art Sculpture and an MA in Fine Art Ceramics. She has for the past 20 years been teaching in Adult Education and has also taught in Prison Education, Further Education, students with special needs/physical disabilities, undergraduates and children. During that time she has been a practicing artist, exhibiting and selling her work. As the end of her final term in the teaching profession fast approaches, she is looking forward to devoting her time fully to creating (when I'm not looking after the donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, birds and sheep!
